GENEEN ROTH IS MY PERSONAL POCKET GURU.  Pocket guru you ask? I guess that does sound a wee bit strange, so allow me to explain…

If you’ve ever struggled with food and body image I’m sure you have intimate knowledge of your inner-body-bully.  You know, that little voice that hits you deep down inside with every putdown you can imagine around the food you eat and the state AND shape of your body.

WELL, if you EVER hear that inner-body-bully again, I have just the solution.  You need to slap that little b*tch right off your shoulder, and replace her with your handy, dandy GENEEN ROTH POCKET GURU!

Now, if you’ve never heard of Geneen Roth, or don’t know much about her it’s high time you did.  Here’s the scoop on this insightful and brilliant woman:

Geneen Roth is a bestselling author of eight books on disordered eating and a pioneer in exploring that chronic dieting and eating disorders go way beyond what we eat, what we weigh and how we feel about our bodies.  She believes our relationship with food is linked to our past personal experiences and issues that have yet to be resolved.  Geneen guides the reader in all of her books to transform our inner ‘food critic’ from punishing and rigid to a kind, open and trustworthy one.

“Darling, if love could speak to you about food what would she say?”
She’s there, in your pocket, just waiting to be propped up on your shoulder.

My favorite phrase in her Women Food and God reading below (a mere :33 seconds in) is:

Here’s a excerpt from Geneen Roth’s Women, Food, and God, where she shares 7 EATING GUIDELINES to eating more consciously:

  • Eat when you are hungry.
  • Eat sitting down in a calm environment. This does not include the car.
  • Eat without distractions. Distractions include radio, television, newspapers, books, intense or anxiety-producing conversations or music.
  • Eat what your body wants.
  • Eat until you are satisfied.
  • Eat (with the intention of being) in full view of others.
  • Eat with enjoyment, gusto and pleasure.
